Summary
MP3 Converter
Description
MP3 Converter was launched in October of 2000 in the midst of the .mp3 revolution with the goal of organizing as many of the quality MP3 conversion software programs available into 1 location. The site quickly gained a large following and became one of the top destinations for MP3 converter software on the Internet. We included programs for various operating systems including Linux and Mac so virtually everyone visiting the site could see what options were available to them. We also wanted to help people understand the technical jargon behind conversion language, how MP3 actually worked, and what you could do with MP3 files. We created an MP3 learning library that explained technical terms for those who weren't familiar. We also created guides for the more technically curious on how the .mp3 codec worked and some history behind its development. The site quickly expanded in an effort to address more conversion needs. CD burners started to become more and more popular so we added a section addressing those and some of the challenges they faced at the time (anyone remember buffer underrun errors?). We also tried to help visitors sort through the various options and point them to what we felt were the best choices to try out. As time went on, the need for converters slowed as free programs like Real Player, Windows Media, and iTunes started offering conversion ability for free. However, many of these players used proprietary file formats (i.e. .ra, .wma, and .aac) in an effort to capitalize on a lucrative market. The proprietary file formats limited the ability to convert to other formats and also limited users to how they could play their music and what devices they could play them on.
